The Regiment traded its horses for jeeps and amphibious assault vehicles in February of 1943, reorganizing partly under cavalry organizations and infantry organizations. That’s the origin of the nickname –Thunderhorse. Strong and fast same as the thunder horse.

In October 2006, 2nd Battalion deployed as part of 4th BCT, 1st Cavalry Division out of Ft. Bliss Texas to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. The battalion was attached to 2nd BCT, 1st Infantry Division in western Baghdad to join the Operation.

After Operation Iraqi Freedom II, the 12th Cavalry Regiment underwent a major transition and combined with the regiment to create the battalions currently in service.

85 years ago, the Gold Country was the scene of the deadliest recorded mine disaster in California, with similarities to other mine explosion accidents.

On a hot summer night in 1922, fire and toxic gas ripped through a mine shaft nearly a mile beneath the surface, trapping 47 miners. The incident at the Argonaut Gold Mine in Jackson, about 30 miles from Sutter’s Mill in Coloma.
