Thanksgiving Day is an ancient festival created by the American people. It is also a holiday for Americans to gather together. There was no fixed date for Thanksgiving at first and was decided by the states of the United States. In 1863, after the independence of the United States, President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. In 1941, the United States Congress officially designated the fourth Thursday of November as “Thanksgiving Day”. Thanksgiving holiday usually lasts from Thursday to Sunday.

There’s an interesting story about it! In September 1620, in order to get rid of religious and political persecution, 102 British Puritans took the “Mayflower number” wooden boat and went to Plymouth, Massachusetts, on November 21st that year. Only 50 immigrants survived because of the lack of food and clothing, the cold, and disease. With the help of the local Indians, they learned to hunt and plant. After hard work, they finally had a good harvest. To thank God for the great harvest and to enhance the friendship with the Indians, these immigrants made a feast with turkeys, corn, sweet potatoes, and fruit in the fall of 1621. Ninety Indians were invited to celebrate for three days with gifts of deer and turkey. So year after year gradually became a fixed festival. In 1795, the first president of the United States declared Thanksgiving a national holiday.

On Thanksgiving Day, the whole country is very busy. In urban and rural areas, costume demonstrations, theatrical performances, and sports competitions are held everywhere. Schools and shops also have holidays according to regulations. The children also imitate the Indian appearance, wear strange costumes, paint facial makeup, or wear masks to sing songs and trumpets in the streets. There are also many people in the church that day. According to custom, people here have to be thankful and praying. And on Thanksgiving Day, every family member always tries to return from the South and the north, the family is sitting together, chewing the delicious turkey and talking about the past.

They usually eat some traditional dishes, such as squash, butter onion, mashed potatoes, papaya pie, and so on.
