The Letterman jacket or the varsity jacket has its origins in 1865 at the prestigious Harvard University. It was a Letterman sweater. It was made out of wool, and the long sleeves were made of leather. It was worn by the Baseball team of the Harvard University. The “letter” on the Harvard university Letterman jacket/sweater was quite big and was at the center. A star patch indicated the captain.

The jacket derives its name from the alphabet that is patched on the sleeve of the jacket.
