Tactical patches are a common part of military uniforms in the United States and around the world. What’s makes custom patches design so popular? By the First World War, machine embroidery had matured. After the United States Army joined the war in 1917, the Army's 81st Infantry Division created what was later called the first rotator cuff badge or tactical patch. The troops trained in Fort Jackson, Florida, near the waters known as Wildcat Creek. Their patch design features a wildcat silhouette on an olive background.

Soon after the war ended, the changes that have taken place in the industrial revolution have brought great changes to embroidery. When the sewing machine appears, later electric embroidery machines greatly reduced the cost and increased the speed of embroidery production.
